In this quarter, we began our dissections. These labs were the main thing that we worked on during these months. The first disection we did was in the phylum Platyhelmintes. We dissected a worm. Worms are very simple organisms. I had already done this dissection my freshman year so I didn't really enjoy this one all that much. The worms are so simple that there is not very much to see.
The next dissection that we did was in the phylum mollusca. We did a dissectoin on clams. I thought that this dissection was a lot more interesting. It still was not my favorite though. The clams looked very different than what i had expected them to. I imagined them smaller and less meaty.
My favorite dissection was in the class cephaloopoda. This word means head foot. I enjoyed the dissection on the squid because their systems are more complex. There was more to see. The coolest thing about the squid was how they have the little bird like beak that shoots out to eat its food. I thought that was so interesting.
The crawfish dissection was interesting as well. As the organisms got more complex, i definitely enjoyed doing the dissections more. The crawfish looked like a mix between a lobster and a shrimp. I remember that this one smelled exceptionally bad though.
Me and Darean did the starfish dissection together and i though that it was kind of interesting. It was dyed a redish and blueish so that the colors and the systems were more visible and easy to see.
The most important part of the quarter was the books that we made on invertebates. That book should have been more important to me than i made it. In our book, we started out in the phylum Porifera. This phylum includes sponges and any other pore bearing organisms. The next phylum was cnidarians which include various types of jellyfish. We then did molluscus and platyhelmintes. The last two phylums we did were echinodermata and arthropods. arthropods include crustaceans and merostomata and pycnogonidia. The final phylum in our book we made was echinodermata which means spiny skin. This phylum has starfish and sea urchins and sand dollars and many more.
I did not really mind the coloring worksheets in this class because it was easy points that just boosted my grade. I did not mind the quizzes either once I knew what i was doing. Im grateful that we get to take them multiple times and i honestly feel like i learn better taking the same thing over because then it really gets into my head.
Working with the 5th graders was interesting. I had fun with it for the most part. Some of those kids think they know more than they do and thats annoying but oh well. Most of them are really good listeners. I think they got bored yesterday when we went over our books cause it was the same information everytime they went to a different group of us.
Overall i enjoyed this quarter because of the dissections. I learned not to put off major projects because it will drop your grade. Thank god this isnt 4th quarter or else i would be really mad.
